“Being active is not a choice; it’s a way of living for me”

When I was growing up I hated anything that had to do with physical activity. I was the worst runner in my school and I failed at every team sport I tried. I remember when I played basketball for one season in high school and I only managed to score one basket the whole season. It wasn’t until I got older when I realized that I didn’t hate being active, I just hadn’t found the sport that was right for me. Now being active is what gets me up in the morning! I may have started late in my life so I am still in the early stages of my athletic career but I know I still have a lot to give!
Growing up I always loved the feeling of freedom that cycling brought to me so as I got older, I decided that I wanted it to be a big part of my life. I love the feeling of freedom, pushing your boundaries and realizing that you are capable of more physically then what you believe is possible. To be able to continuously overcome the voice in my head that tells me I can’t - is one of the greatest achievements I can make for myself every day.
I think it’s amazing how strong and inviting the women’s cycling community is! I love learning from women cyclists and I love the enthusiasm so many of them have to be open about their experiences. Especially with this new era of social media, it makes it easier than ever to communicate, meet and share ideas with this awesome group!
My mother. Immigrating from Poland and raising 3 kids, she taught me that you can do anything in life; as long as you are persistent.
The choice to start competing in cycling. I have gone back and forth with the idea for a while because I did not want cycling to ever get to the point where it felt like a chore for me or something I felt like I had to do. I think letting go of those potential anxieties allowed me to realize that as long as I’m having the most fun when I am competing, I will always win. Being active is not a choice; it’s a way of living for me. I love to be physical every day. Whether it’s cycling, rock climbing, surfing etc. - it’s what gets me up in the morning!
I gain my motivation from my love for being active and participating in sports. I love being on the road, the dirt, the water and on rocks. There is always something new to discover about yourself every day when you decide to get out of bed and be present. My favourite quote is ‘What doesn’t kill you makes your stronger.”
